  • The Need

    Chuck Heide

In June 2023, Chuck was diagnosed with AL Amyloidosis and Smoldering Multiple Myeloma. AL Amyloidosis causes abnormal proteins to build up and damage organs, especially the kidneys. There's no cure, only treatments. Chuck’s diagnosis came from a routine check-up that showed kidney issues. He quickly started chemotherapy and targeted therapy at Roswell Park, but by November, treatments weren't effective. Doctors then recommended a stem cell transplant.

In December 2023, Chuck underwent an autologous stem cell transplant, receiving his own healthy cells back after intense chemotherapy. The procedure caused severe fluid retention, and he gained 120 pounds. By April 2024, tests showed the disease remained, leading to more chemotherapy and targeted treatments. Chuck currently has Stage 3 kidney disease and receives weekly treatments, weakening his immune system and preventing him from working. This has put significant financial strain on his family.
