  • The Need

    Elijah Gawlak

In April of 2024, 8 month-old Elijah was admitted to Oishei Children’s Hospital and diagnosed with mixed phenotype acute leukemia. This is a rare form of cancer where the person exhibits both major forms of leukemia at once (ALL and AML). For the rest of the year Eli spent most of his time living in the hospital as he received many rounds of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant in October from his 3 year-old brother Dylan.

During his hospital stay, Elijah’s mother Hannah left her job as a critical care physician assistant while the family was living in two places at once. At this time, Hannah and her husband Craig took turns caring for Eli in the hospital and raising his brother Dylan at home. They did everything they could to maintain some sense of normalcy for their children.

Elijah came home in December to continue treatment. He visits Roswell Park and OCH regularly as they try to defeat his cancer once and for all. Hannah returned to work as a physician assistant educator while Craig stays home with his two young boys. They are now faced with the challenge of getting Eli the help he needs currently while always preparing for what may come in the future. Please consider a purchase or a donation to Elijah's online fundraiser.
