    The Need

Amrith is a 24-year-old foreign exchange student from India, truly reaching for the stars— as he is pursuing a PhD in aerospace engineering. He is a fun-loving kid who loves to cook for friends and laugh the weekends away. Unfortunately, Amrith has not had much normalcy in the last few years. When he was 13 years old, he got diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (a form of pre-leukemia). His younger brother also was diagnosed with the same disease a few years later.

For years, in India he would get regular blood transfusion as treatment. Unfortunately, when he moved to Buffalo in 2021 for graduate school, his health took a turn for the worse. In June of 2022, the doctors at Roswell told Amrith that he would need to get a bone marrow transplant in order to try and cure his disease. This news was particularly hard because his family couldn’t come to help him due to visa issues and his brother being equally as sick in India.

Luckily, Amrith did get a successful transplant on June 2nd, 2022. He was blessed with a good transplant match. However, his road to recovery has been anything but easy. He lost a lot of his strength during chemo and radiation treatments. It has been a struggle to find his way back and gain a sense of normal. To make matters worse, Amrith’s family had to deal with the devastation of his 22 year old brother, Amarnath, passing away from his transplant failing on February 20, 2023.
