    The Need

Luke was a kind, funny, creative, and smart 6-year-old boy. He loved fishing and playing army. Free time was spent up in the Adirondacks fishing, swimming, and spending family time together. On September 12, 2020, Luke was out fishing when the boat he was on was struck by a drunk driver. Luke suffered a severe traumatic brain injury which left him minimally conscious, unable to communicate or move his body.

After traditional therapy failed to lead to significant improvement, we began looking for alternative treatments that have the potential to help. Luke started hyperbaric oxygen therapy several months ago which resulted in him beginning to smile. Luke now will smile and vocalize when he sees or hears something funny. He likes to play pranks on people and will laugh if he can "scare" someone with his pretend snakes. This is a sign that he is aware of his surroundings and comprehending at least some of what we say to him.

Luke's next treatment will be to pursue stem cell therapy. The goal is to help repair and replace damaged brain tissue. This is a treatment that is not yet approved for brain injuries but has shown a lot of promise for brain injured patients.
