In March, a family originally from Naperville heard some devastating news. Their 4-year-old daughter has Batten disease... a genetic disease so rare that there is no treatment, no cure, and is 100% fatal. They had their 2-year-old tested as well, and found that she also has Batten. Neither are expected to see their teenage years. The disease causes buildup of proteins in the brain so that healthy, precocious children first lose their speech, sight and motor functions, then continue to decline to a vegetative state. The parents are doing whatever they can to raise money for research, but they are just two people, and need help. MORE INFO
