    The Need

It was a long nine months of tests and hospital admissions before the Nirelli family received the diagnosis of Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood, or AHC, for their daughter, Abby. On December 3, 2018, Abby became completely paralyzed on her left side. They were told she had an ear infection, but as the day went on she got worse. Her parents took her to the local children’s hospital where she was admitted for testing. It wasn’t until the next day one of the doctors suggesting Abby having AHC. The doctors gave the family a two-page article on the disease and told them Abby needed to be tested as an outpatient because insurance wouldn’t cover the cost (over a thousand dollars). It was December 26, 2018, that they took Abby to a genetic doctor to be tested for this rare, one in a million disease. On January 9, 2019, the Nirellis received the call from their genetic counselor that Abby did indeed have AHC. Almost two years since they’ve received this diagnosis, and it doesn’t seem any easier. Abby has good days and bad days. She has successes and she has struggles. She is one in a million!
